Cordless Drills are wonderful tools. Almost everybody from professionals to home improvement DIY hobbyists use them. When this tool stops working it's a nightmare because the work is interrupted. And oftentimes the problem is that the batteries are no good anymore.
The battery chemistry has 3 types: NiCad, NiMH, and Lithium-ion. NiCad, or NiCd, battery is used in older cordless drill tools. They are the least expensive, so almost all inexpensive cordless tools use this type of battery. There is one problem with this battery. It's toxic to the environment. So when it's time to dispose the dead NiCd battery it's a problem.
It seems the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup trucks were prone to damage due to their prototype batteries. There are no reported fires or injuries to operators as a result of the damage. Chrysler is testing a lithium ion stocks powered battery since the third quarter of 2011. The project was expected to run through 2014, but no plans have been made to extend the testing.

While most beginners will opt to Lithium battery stocks play it safe by getting a ready-made boat that can be used right out of the box others might be a little more adventurous preferring to get a kit for DIY assembly. What are you going to be using the drill for? Let's say that you are planning on building some light furniture and maybe will use the drill on weekends mostly. You probably don't need a super powerful drill with the most expensive battery technology. You could probably get by with a 12 volt drill, no need for hammering action, and you could probably do fine with a NiCad battery as opposed to Lithium Ion. Sure, a Lithium mines Ontario Ion battery would be really nice, and would charge faster, but if you aren't planning on using the drill for continuous hours at a time you could save a few bucks in this department.
Memory effect will reduce the life of a battery. Modern Lithium-ion batteries do not suffer from memory effect, although it does occur in Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) units when charged from levels other than 0% of battery capacity. If the (NiMH) unit was fully charged when initially at say 20% capacity, the resulting available capacity would only be 80% of the factory original. Of course every time you charged the battery, the total available capacity would reduce and eventually your mobile phone would prove to be increasingly useless. Nearly all new electronic devices are now powered by Lithium batteries. You should always condition your (NiMH) battery from new.
Third, it is quite important to fully charge the battery every time, also to run the battery to be empty every time. The reason is the battery will lose charge day after day if the battery in your notebook is a nickel metal hydride. Therefore, your battery will dies a certain days later and you need to order a new one. Your work will be affected and money will come out of your pocket. Shortly, you can keep your battery in a good condition for a long time if you do as what have mentioned above.
